Seduction, betrayal, adventure, moral outrage, mystery, romance: these are the narrative engines of America's most popular texts. In this course -- a literary and historical survey of American best sellers -- we will seek to understand not just which texts have been popular but why, paying close attention to both their aesthetic qualities and their cultural contexts.
