Analysis
Make a diagram of the forces acting on a block placed on an inclined
plane. The force due to gravity can be shown as acting at the center of mass
of the block, the friction force will act along the interface between the block
and the plane. Determine the component of the gravitational force that is
parallel to the plane. What is the value of this force when slip just starts?
If the friction force is given by: Ffriction = m N , where N is the normal force between the block and the plane
and m is the friction coefficient,
determine how m is related to the angle
at which slip starts. What determines if the block slides or tips?
Make
a plot to show the effect of increased weight on the angle at which slip
starts. What effect does the increased weight of the block have on the force
due to friction and the coefficient of friction?
What effect does vibration
play in the above results? What happened to the block once it started
to slip? Did lubrication change this observation?
Comment on the relationship
between your measurements and the performance of a bicycle. Where is
friction desirable and where is it a disadvantage? How would you extend these
concepts to a boat or an aircraft? |
