Analysis
By
using sketches of the different flow fields for the bike and tire
models , compare the flow behavior, a) in the region ahead of each model, b)
in the wake region downstream of each model, and c) in the flow over the side
of each model. Which model do you think has the lowest drag? What is the effect
of the angle of attack (the angle between the longitudinal axis of the model
and the incoming flow direction) ? Which model is most sensitive to flow
velocity and angle of attack? Discuss how these observations relate to the
performance of a bicycle, taking into account the effects of cross winds.
From
your observations of the flow around wing shaped models in the visualization
tunnels what conclusions can you make that are important for aircraft
and hydrofoils? Do these suggest limitations in the allowed angle of attack
if 'flight" is to be sustained?
