The application of human power to a buoyant aircraft was employed by Dupuy de Lome who made a hydrogen filled airship capable of carrying several people. This was fitted with a single tractor propeller that was hand cranked by eight men. The craft made a single flight in February 1872, and is credited with reaching a speed of 8 km/h during its voyage from Fort Vincennes to Mondecourt. |
