In Nanjing,
China, with a population of 2.66 million people the major form of personal
transportation is the bicycle. Public transportation is also provided by
bus, trolley, train, and various motorized vehicles. As the city develops
new industrial areas outside the city center, the challenge is to implement urban
planning so as to avoid traffic congestion and pollution. How can motorized
vehicles be accommodated without disrupting the human powered transportation
component? Should housing for the workforce be provided in the new industrial
