Composite Materials

· For the bone shaped configuration (b) tested in compression, the difference between the Poisson's ratio of the matrix and the fiber induces a tensile stress in the neck region normal to the surface of the fiber.
· For the compressive applied stress σc , the normal stress is given by:
σN = σc(νm - νf) Ef /{(1 + νm)Ef + (1 - νf - 2νf2 ) Em}
where
νi is the Poisson's ratio of the material i.
· Observation of the compressive stress required to induce debonding between the matrix and the fiber gives the tensile strength of the bond.
· These tests require accurate alignment of the systems and a transparent matrix to facilitate detecting debonding.
