             In 
              1988, Secretary of Defense Frank Carlucci 52, Princeton President 
              Harold Shapiro *64, Secretary of State George Shultz 42, and 
              Secretary of the Treasury James Baker 52 posed next to a plaque 
              of James Madison 1771 at a luncheon in the State Department dining 
              room celebrating the first time in U.S. history that the three ranking 
              cabinet officers were graduates of the same university. Princetons 
              tradition of service continues today, as Mitch Daniels 71, 
              director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Donald Rumsfeld 
              54, secretary of defense, serve in President George W. Bushs 
              cabinet.
