November 3, 2004: From the Archives Freshmen unload fuel for the Big Three championship bonfire on Cannon
Green in this 1920 photo. According to Princeton tradition, bonfire construction
was the responsibility of dink-wearing freshmen who often were aided in
their task by townspeople and campus construction workers. Bonfires usually
were topped off with an outhouse and an effigy of John Harvard, a Yale
bulldog, or both.
