Lt. j.g. Michael Carolus, an engineering duty officer in the Navy Reserve who received his Ph.D. in chemistry, said he wore his uniform to Commencement to honor his Navy service, to recognize his shipmates from his 10 years as a Navy medic, and to note the Memorial Day holiday the previous day.
