Road
features that may trap bike wheels need to be considered and rectified when making
a route . The diagrams show two common situations.
The desirable
drainage grates shown in the upper diagram have water slots that are oriented
and sized so as to minimize the risk of capturing a wheel during normal
travel. Designs of this type should be used when new roads are specified or
be retrofitted to routes that have been designated as bike routes.
The
lower diagram shows how pavement widening at a grade crossing can be used to
permit cyclists to cross the rails at 900 and then join the normal
right-of-way. Combined with a rubber flange-groove filler on the track this
strategy reduces the rail crossing hazard. |
