Road features that may trap bike wheels need to be considered and rectified when making a route . The diagrams show two common situations.

The desirable drainage grates shown in the upper diagram have water slots that are oriented and sized so as to minimize the risk of capturing a wheel during normal travel. Designs of this type should be used when new roads are specified or be retrofitted to routes that have been designated as bike routes.

The lower diagram shows how pavement widening at a grade crossing can be used to permit cyclists to cross the rails at 900 and then join the normal right-of-way. Combined with a rubber flange-groove filler on the track this strategy reduces the rail crossing hazard.
