Failure Mechanisms

· Fatigue failure is a statistical process with a range of lifetimes being found using "identical" test samples for each load condition.
· The data yields a series of probability curves, the value of P for each of these is the failure probability under the selected stress and cycle number conditions.
· Design for safety dictates working on the low probability side of the curve (green area on the lower diagram).
