Failure Mechanisms

· The data shown is for an iron based alloy. Here C = 20, a good choice for most engineering alloys.
· The curve is used by first computing the Larson-Miller parameter for the desired lifetime, tf, and operating temperature, T, and then obtaining the maximum stress level that the material can support under these conditions.
· This procedure assumes that the same creep mechanism is operative over the environmental range of interest.
