Failure Mechanisms

· As the pressure increases, the hoop stress will increase and reach a value at which either (i) the walls of the pressure vessel start to plastically deform, or (ii) the stress reaches the value required to cause fast fracture in the presence of the crack.

· The green area is safe for design use, but includes no engineering safety factor.
