Kinetics and Microstructural Control

· In the martempering process shown, the sample is cooled rapidly below the nose of the thermodynamic transformation processes taking austenite to pearlite.
· Before reaching the martensite start temperature, the material is held at a constant temperature to remove stresses introduced by the rapid cooling
· The tempering process is terminated before the bainite start time is reached and the sample quenched through the martensite formation zone.
· The final microstructure is martensitic, but with lower stresses than would result if the initial cooling trajectory had been continued through the martensite formation zone.
