A letter from a reader about Remembering Dean Finch’s ‘kindly guidance’ Permit me to add, in gratitude, a belated recollection of Dean Jeremiah Finch, who passed away recently (Notebook, Oct. 5). In 1951-52 I served as research assistant to Dean Finch, compiling a bibliography of the works of Robert Browne, a 16th-century dissenting clergyman. Dean Finch’s kindly guidance helped open my eyes to an academic career. Could there be many deans like him, who sent wedding gifts – as he did to me – years after graduation?
