Diffusion

· The density distribution produced by compaction of a cylinder of steel powder with a single top punch is shown opposite.
· Regions that have had the largest relative motion of the powder particles during compaction have the highest density.
· Near the die walls, the density decreases uniformly from the bottom to the top of the green cylinder. Friction between the press walls and the powder is responsible for the curvature of the equal density contours.
· With a double acting punch the density will be lowest in the center of the cylindrical compact.
