Failure Mechanisms

· In the final mode (III) of brittle fracture, generalized plastic deformation occurs in the sample and nucleates cracks. The global plastic deformation is still small compared to that associated with ductile fracture.
· At the stress levels (and temperatures) associated with this deformation process the sample fails by the rapid growth of the deformation induced cracks in a brittle fracture.
· The diagrams indicate that the fracture can propagate both through the grains and along the grain boundaries.
