Failure Mechanisms

· Cross-slip requires a dislocation to move from one slip plane to another via an intersecting slip plane. This process is not strongly temperature dependent.

· Climb involves matter transport and moves the extra half plane of edge dislocations from the blocked plane to one on which dislocation motion can continue. The diffusion responsible for climb is strongly temperature dependent and weakly stress dependent. Climb is a high temperature recovery process.
