This beautiful drypoint was discovered inside a collection of French World War I prints and posters. The artist can be identified by his signature, Auguste Brouet (1872-1941), a printmaker who was born and lived all his life in Paris. As of yet, no title can be found for this image of refugees traveling along a country road.

Writing in The International Studio (1920), Marcel Valotaire described the career of this little known artist: “At the age of sixteen he made his first attempt at etching, using as his sole implement a nail, and as his plate a scrap of zinc gutter-pipe with a ground— if one may so call it—of floor polish. The proof obtained from a single biting of this little plate, Les petits Joueurs de Dis, is quite remarkable, and arrests attention because it immediately reminds one of Rembrandt, although at that time the youthful debutant was completely unaware of the great Dutch master’s existence as an etcher, and certainly had never seen one of his etchings. Thus from this early beginning as an aquafortist, Brouet has remained himself, and his manner and style are borrowed from no one, but are peculiarly his own.”

Happy Thanksgiving.

Auguste Brouet was a close friend of my father.
I want to give you the information that he engraved with women's watches string...and he died blind because this tiring work.
I have some of his copper and about 300 masterworks nearly all artist proofs, also an exclusive painting and one pastel. I will be glad to provide any information you would be interested in.
Best regards

Hello,

I have a chalcography by Auguste Brouet entitled "Le Marchand de Briquets". It is in excellent condition. Would you have any idea of value? It is about 8 inches by 10 inches (without mat and frame.)

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Sincerely,
Bonnie

I have two signed etchings By Brouet that I inherited from an Uncle in New york that was a art collector. One is of a ballet dancer tying her shoe, the other looks like a bar scene, with a woman and man in the front. She looks like a Gypsie.

I would be interested in the value or any info on them. I can send you a jpg. if needed.
Thank you so much,
Wendy Hodgden

I have a framed picture by A.Brouet, signed with the date1887, of the Rembrandt self-portrait. I always thought it was a print until the glass broke and the black mount was removed, showing clearly that in places the paint went over the edges of the picture's area. If anyone can shed information on this I would be grateful. It was purchased from a retired doctor in Southampton by my husband's parents in the early 1920's.

Any information would be gratefully received.
